Saturday, September 25 inauguretes at AlbumArte, independent space for contemporary art, the solo exhibition ofEstibaliz Sádaba Murguía (Bilbao 1963) entitled SUBVERSIONES, (until October 28). The project has been realized thanks to the Acción Cultural Española (AC/E), the public institution dedicated to promoting Spanish culture and artistic heritage in Spain and around the world, that supports it through the Programme for the Internationalisation of Spanish Culture (PICE) and Etxepare Euskal Institutua, that promotes the international presence of basque creator and artists. The project is carried out in collaboration with the Real Academia de España en Roma, where the artist has been a resident (2018-2019).
This exhibition inaugurates the tenth year of activity of AlbumArte.
The project of the exhibition, winner of the Programme for the Internationalisation of Spanish Culture (PICE) (ed. 2021), investigates the role of women, their marginalization from the public sphere and the places of power sharing, with their consequent confinement within the domestic area, dynamics that the Basque feminist artist (also curator of her projects) has been telling in her works for many years. In her solo exhibition at AlbumArte, Estibaliz Sádaba Murguía, presents a new project, which includes a series of new works, made with different techniques, such as photography, collage and video, with which she focuses on this relationship between women and power and women and the domestic sphere, from an experimental perspective. Her artistic practice has always integrated feminist theory and activism, with the desire to create networks and establish genealogies by means of actions, in which the body becomes an instrument, a place of experimentation, and which are then subsequently reworked and reconstructed through various processes, such as editing in films, post-production in photographic works or the unexpected reassembly of stereotyped images.
For the unpublished video that gives the title to the exhibition, in Italian Sovversioni domestiche, begun as a research during her residency at the Real Academia de España en Roma and realized on the occasion of the exhibition, the artist starts from a reflection on the way in which women have been relegated to the “domestic space”: that space of family refuge in which men rested after their “exposure” to public space, and in which women in the meantime had managed the care of children and family goods, and which becomes a place of psychological and social confinement. In order to make the video, which has a neo-documentary slant, the artist worked with the texts of two important Italian feminist thinkers and activists of the 1970s, Silvia Federici and Mariarosa Dalla Costa, who intervene in the filmic work, theorizing on the method for reinterpreting domestic space, thus seeking an egalitarian space that allows women to generate a new way of interaction and socialization.
The exhibition tries to solicit a possible response to how to subvert this space of confinement and bring that struggle out of the kitchen, into the streets, reclaiming a place in public space that is more than due. Right now, after the devastating effects of the pandemic, we are increasingly aware that we cannot start over without women!
