In line with the fluid nature of independent practices, over the years The Independent has varied on a number of occasions the way the selected groups are involved. A selection of independents has in fact been invited by the curatorial team to present themselves in MAXXI’s physical space, with a constant intention to occupy the museum’s interstitial or official spaces: from the atrium to the stairwell, by way of the galleries, The Independent has experimented with installations (2014-2015), the combinatory possibility of the video idiom (2016-2017), through to the current format, The Wall, in the Carlo Scarpa Foyer. Since 2017, The Wall has presented a statement on the identities of the Italian and international groups and spaces hosted and acting in this space through diverse media and idioms.
